Control

With Brawl coming out, there have been arguments about the control scheme, and what will be used. Well, Sakurai has finally answered our prayers! He said that you can control your character with the Wii Remote on its side, Wii Remote and Nunchuck Combo, the classic controller, and last but not least, the Gamecube controller! Characters, stages, control options, what's not to love about this game!

The Basic Rules

For those of you new to the Smash Bros. Series, there’s a couple of things you need to know. The first thing you need to know is that you’ll be battling against up to 3 other players in an epic Brawl! In the Super Smash Bros. series, it’s always been the same: KO your opponents by throwing them off screen! When you hurt an opponent by using your attacks, their damage meter build up. When their meter is high enough, they’ll fly far! The higher the meter, the higher the character flies! When they fly off screen the opponent loses a life or loses a point, while the person who KO’d them gets a point! Pretty simple, huh? Well, that’s basically how you play, so get BRAWLING!!

Recovering

Oh, great. You’ve been blasted off the stage. Well, now what? You get back on of course! In the Smash Bros. Series, you have the option to get back onto the stage. How? Well, I’ll tell you! You use your double jump when you can. Then, you use your Up B move to get back up. Hopefully by now you should be clinging to the edge or back on the stage. If not, bye, bye! In Brawl, if you don’t even try this method, you’re gonna get owned.

Final Smashes

What is a Final Smash, you ask? A Final Smash is a huge attack that can be used only once during a battle. To use a Final Smash you need to grab a Smash Ball first (above). You can see many personalities behind the character’s Final Smashes. In Link’s Final Smash he traps you between two Triforces and slashes you repeatedly. In Mario's, he charges up and releases a flurry of fire all over the stage! Expect to see more Final Smashes that reflect the character’s personalities. Click the Smash Ball to see a list of all the known Final Smashes.

Moving and Shooting

In previous Smash Bros. games, you had rapid fire guns like the Super Scope. Didn’t you hate it how when you shot, you sat there, all exposed? Well, not anymore! In Brawl, now you can move and jump while shooting! This will be good news for fans of the Super Scope!

Names

The option to enter your name into the game has returned! But this time around, they’ve added a special feature to the names. Personal button configuration! You choose your name, then a button configuration! Pretty sweet huh? Sadly though, you can only have very few letters. But the button configuration makes up for it! With all this personalization, we’re going to need more memory! There is a possibility that you can save your profiles onto a wiimotes, with brawl's expected popularity this would be very useful.

Standard Combos

I was tired of button mashing. My fingers hurt, my controller is wonky, and my pride is hurt as well. So Sakurai announced we can now hold down the button in order to do combos. Pretty sweet, huh? But what if you miss button mashing? That’s ok! You can do that too! People old and new to Brawl will enjoy this update!

Footstool Jumping

There's an interesting new technique in smash bros. brawl; the footstool jump. It’s sorta like in the old Mario games; you jump on an enemy, press the jump button at the right time, and you get boosted high into the air, pretty nice, eh? This attack may not seem very strategic, but you can also use it in mid-air! You just knocked your opponent of the stage, but they regain control, they do they're in-air jump, they're close enough to do their special jump! Quick, get down and footstoll jump them, in addition to sending them flying down, it sends you flying back up to the stage! No more sacrifices! Play your cards right, and you’ll soon master the Footstool Jump!

The Subspace Emissary

What is the Subspace Emissary, you ask? Well, according to Sakurai, “It’s a robust side-scrolling action game!” It’s basically Adventure mode, but with different stories for each character! This is the first Smash Bros. game in the series to include a story. Say you want to play as Mario. You’d have a different story than Fox!

But the story’s not too detailed; it’s put together by a bunch of quick movies. According to Sakurai, “The Adventure mode also emphasizes character development.” It’ll include things, and obstacles from their histories, and they’ll all be different. Some universes may intercept, bringing together enemies, lands, and more! In the first picture with Pit (Seen Below), you‘ll see enemies from Kirby games! In another Pit pic, it shows Bullet Bills! “With so many wonderful characters appearing together, it’s like a dream action game. We’re putting tons of fighting spirit into making this game, so I hope you’re all looking forward to it,” quoted Sakurai, “Oh, and this is all included in the same Game Disc, so rest easy.”

Stickers

Stickers? The little plastic ones? In a Smash Bros. game? What the…? Yes, I’m happy to say Stickers are coming to Brawl. Stickers are like Trophies. Only they are a lot easier to get a hold of. These Stickers come from various Nintendo games, like Big Brain Academy, Earthbound, Yoshi’s Story, Nintendogs, Balloon Fighter, Fire Emblem, and much, much more! There is a game mode where you can mess with stickers and make a scene using ones you've collected. You can even save screenshots! Stickers in Brawl will bring back the kid in you, as well bring back memories from playing such games. The sticker mode, will be a fun sidetracker when you've gotten bored of lighting Mario on fire with your flame breath.

Tether Recovery

Tether recovery is making a return to brawl! For those of you who don't know what it is, some characters have tethers, like link (hookshot), Samus (grapple beam), or in brawl Zero Suit Samus (plasma whip)! Say you’re Zero Suit Samus. Bowser comes along and punches you off. You’re falling, and you can’t make it back with your double jump, but you're so close you can taste it! Samus can use her Tether Recovery to get back up to the stage! Cool, eh? This technique is great if you like to go after people who are trying to get back on.
